Washington, Oct. 13, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Social Security Administration has announced an 8.7 percent cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits on Thursday, October 13. This adjustment is one of the highest COLAs in many years. (The highest COLA in Social Security history was in 1980 at 14.3 percent. It was part of a three-year stretch of record-setting COLAS – 9.9 percent in 1979 and 11.2 percent in 1981. There were no COLAs in 2009 and 2010. After five years of COLAs under 2 percent, the 2022 COLA was 5.9 percent.) The adjustments will be made effective for Social Security beneficiaries in January 2023 benefit payments.
